'Wage board inconsistent with market price is unacceptable'
Leaders of Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ) warned the government that the journalist community will not accept any wage board incompatible with the market price, says a press release. They were speaking at a discussion at the National Press Club jointly organised by BFUJ and DUJ marking the May Day on Tuesday. Expressing deep concern over the delay in implementing the recommendations of the latest Wage Board, the leaders said although there is a provision in the constitution that a new wage board should be declared every five years for newspaper industry, this is yet to be implemented due to the indifference of the past governments. The leaders sought help from Chief Adviser Fakhruddin Ahmed in this regard. BFUJ President Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, General Secretary Abdul Jalil Bhuiyan, DUJ General Secretary Omar Faruk, its former President Shahjahan Mia, Azizul Islam Bhuiyan, Kartik Chatarjee, Abdul Mannan and other leaders spoke at the discussion chaired by DUJ President Altaf Mahmud. The journalists criticised the authorities of some newspapers for not implementing dearness allowance till date. They also demanded investigations into all sorts of irregularities and corruption in state-run Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) and punishment of the people responsible.
