Drug peddler killed in shootout with Rab in Rajshahi

A drug peddler was killed in a shootout between Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) members and his accomplices at Monoharpur village in Charghat early yesterday.

The dead was identified as Mokbul Hossain of Gargaria village, according to the Rab.

Acting on a tip-off that a huge quantity of Indian Phensidyl bottles is being smuggled into the country, the Rab members divided in several teams raided the village at around 2:00am.

Sensing the presence of the elite force, the drug peddlers attacked a Rab team with sticks, machetes and firearms, said a Rab press release.

The team members then retaliated with fire and the gunfight continued for several minutes. Later, drug peddler Mokbul was found lying on the ground under Talbaria Bridge with bullet injuries.

He was taken to Charghat Upazila Health Complex, but the doctors declared him dead.

Mokbul, known as Mokbul Dakat in the area, had long been engaged in robbery and arms and drug smuggling, the Rab press release said quoting local people.

The Rab members also arrested Liton, one of the accomplices of Mokbul, along with 370 bottles of Phensidyl and seized a one-shooter gun and a 25-inches machete from the scene.
