Madrasa student gets life, 3 others 14 years for killing boy in Sylhet

A Sylhet court yesterday sentenced a madrasa student to life imprisonment and three other students to 14 years' rigorous imprisonment for killing a fellow student.

Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Biplob Goswami handed down the verdict to Sarwar Alam, Mujibul Haque, Layek Ahmed and Asaduzzaman. All of them are students of Fatehpur Kamil Madrasa in Sylhet Sadar upazila.

The lifer, Sarwar, was also fined Tk 5,000. If he fails to pay, he would have to suffer an additional six months' imprisonment. The three others were also fined Tk 2,000 each. If they fail to pay, they would have to suffer an additional three months' imprisonment.

According to the prosecution, Sarwar and his accomplices Mujibul Haque, Layek Ahmed and Asaduzzaman strangled Bilal Uddin Chowdhury, a student of class VI, on March 18 in 2006 and dumped his body into a septic tank of a house.

Considering the age of Sarwar, a student of Fazil first year, the court sentenced him to life term instead of capital punishment.

The court also gave an order to send the three other convicts, aged below 16, to Juvenile Correction Centres.

Prime accused Sarwar was in jail hajat while the three others were on bail as of yesterday.
