Charges framed against Harris Chy, Mamun in two graft cases

A Dhaka court yesterday framed charges against Harris Chowdhury, political secretary to former prime minister Khaleda Zia, and controversial businessman Giasuddin Al Mamun in connection with two graft cases.Proceedings of the arms cases against former minister Nazmul Huda, and lawmakers Salahuddin Ahmed and Hafiz Ibrahim were adjourned following time petitions from the prosecution and the defence. Judge Momin Ullah of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court framed charges against Mamun in his presence at 3:30pm while Harris is absconding. Mamun pleaded not guilty and demanded justice before the court after the judge read out the charges to him. The court fixed May 6 and 9 for trial of the cases. On April 5, two officials of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the graft cases with the sessions judge's court seeking arrest warrants against them for not submitting their wealth statements to the commission within the stipulated time. ACC Deputy Director Abu Sayeed filed the case against Harris while the commission's Assistant Director SMM Akhter Hamid Bhuiyan lodged the case against Mamun. Following the cases, the court issued arrest warrants against them and directed the authorities concerned to send a copy of the arrest warrants to the police stations concerned. It also directed the police stations to submit a report to the court within the next scheduled date. On February 18, the ACC had directed Harris and Mamun to submit their wealth statements within 72 hours, but neither they nor any representatives on their behalf submitted the statements. The anti-graft body at a meeting on March 29 gave approval for filing of the cases, sources said. CASE AGAINST HUDA The same court adjourned the proceeding of the arms case against former communications minister Nazmul Huda until May 7 following a time petition by the defence lawyers. Huda was produced before the court at 11:30am under tight security. Dhanmondi police on April 10 pressed charges against Huda for possessing illegal firearms and ammunition. The joint forces seized a revolver, 14 bullets, a huge amount of local and foreign currencies, four passports and a mobile phone at Huda's Dhanmondi residence. They arrested him on February 4. CASE AGAINST SALAHUDDIN The same court yesterday adjourned the charge hearing of the arms case against the detained former BNP lawmaker from Demra in the capital until May 7 following a time petition by the defence lawyers. The joint forces on February 4 seized weapons and foreign currencies along with nine diplomatic passports and eight other Bangladeshi passports, 23 mobile phone sets, videocassettes, compact discs, shotgun licence during the raid at Salahuddin's house at Kadamtola in Shyampur in a bid to arrest him. SALAHUDDIN'S GRAFT CASE Salahuddin was shown arrested yesterday in connection with a graft case filed against him for amassing huge amount of money and property through illegal means. Metropolitan Magistrate Jagannath Das Khokon passed the order following a petition submitted by the investigation officer of the case to show Salahuddin arrested in the case. CASE AGAINST HAFIZ IBRAHIM The same court could not frame charges against Hafiz in the arms case, as the jail authorities could not produce him before the court yesterday. Gulshan police pressed charges against Hafiz on March 18 in connection with the case filed for possessing illegal firearms. The joint forces seized a sword and knife from his Gulshan residence on February 27 and later an arms case was filed against him the same day.
