Injunction against BA decision to cut commission to travel agents
Staff Correspondent
A Dhaka court yesterday issued a temporary injunction against the decision of British Airways (BA) to reduce the commission to travel agents on ticket sale from seven percent to one percent. The injunction was issued following a case filed by Zakir Hussain on behalf of the travel agents. The court also suspended the decision regarding the commission until the temporary injunction is resolved. Meanwhile, the Association of Travel Agents of Bangladesh (Atab) has vowed to stick to its decision of non-cooperation with the BA activities in Bangladesh in protest against the decision of drastic reduction in commission. Atab will continue to boycott BA until and unless it withdraw its decision, said Atab President Muhaimin Saleh at a press conference in the city yesterday. The Atab members have stopped selling of BA tickets since April 1. Saleh said if the BA implements its decision, the other airlines may also follow suit. As a result, the whole travel agency sector would face ruination. None of the travel agents can survive with one percent commission, he added. He said that all the 38 British Airways agents in Bangladesh are ready to continue their movement against the decision in order to save the travel agency sectors. On February 4, the British Airways in a letter informed the travel agents that the airline would give one percent commission, instead of seven percent, to the travel agents for selling tickets. The decision would be effective from April 1, the letter said.
