A five-member committee, headed by Assistant Conservator of Forest Saleh Mohammad Shoib Khan, has been formed to probe the cause of the fire that destroyed a large number of trees in the world's largest mangrove forest

The committee has been asked to submit its report on April 4. Another committee was formed on Saturday to determine the extent of damage caused by the fire.

Chief Conservator of Forest Osman Gani, who came to Bagerhat on Saturday, visited the Chandpai range of the Sundarbans of Sunday. He was staying at Morrelganj upazila where a camp has been set up to monitor the situation round-the- clock.

Several incidents of fire took place in the Sundarbans in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
