Dr Kamal tells BBC Bangladesh Sanglap
Staff Correspondent
Eminent jurist Dr Kamal Hossain yesterday stressed the need to form a national commission to investigate and root out militancy from the country. He said this at the BBC Bangladesh Sanglap held at Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Centre in the city. The discussants at the programme also said the government should make public information given by the top militant leaders who were executed recently. Former member of Anti-Corruption Commission Prof Moniruzzaman Miah, 'Blue for Peace' campaigner Asma Kibria and Executive Director of UBINIG Farida Akhter were the other discussants in the Sanglap organised by BBC Bangla Service and BBC World Service Trust. Replying to a question whether there would be any constitutional crisis at the end of the tenure of President Iajuddin Ahmed in June, Dr Kamal said the country would not face any constitutional crisis over the issue. Iajuddin Ahmed will continue to act as the president until a new president is elected by the next parliament, he added. Prof Moniruzzaman, also a former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, said the people's confidence in the caretaker government would be boosted if it makes public its agenda for the election. He said each political party needs to undergo reforms in order to ensure fair politics in the country. Asma Kibria and Farida Akhter said the politicians have made a lot of contribution to the country. Dr Kamal said the present situation is the outcome of confrontational politics. He, however, said there is no alternative to fair politics to restore glorious image of the country.
