Police yesterday arrested a sub-inspector (SI) of Uttara Police Station in connection with demanding bribe from a woman, and a probationary sub-inspector (PSI) and an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Paltan Police Station for their alleged involvement in misappropriating a businessman's Tk 10 lakh.A Dhaka court yesterday placed SI Abul Hashem of Uttara on police remand for interrogation and sent PSI Tanvir Hossain Tuhin and ASI Shah Aziz to jail. Sources said Uttara police arrested Bibhash Chandra Sarker at a house in Uttara on March 1. Police informant Shafiq asked Bibhash's mother Manjila Rani Sarker to contact the police station. When Manjila went to the police station the following day, SI Hashem asked her to pay him Tk 50,000 and promised her, if she paid him, to show her son arrested under section 54 of Code of Criminal Procedure (arrest on suspicion), said Bibhash's brother Babul Chandra Sarker. "The police informant said police would otherwise show him arrested in connection with a robbery case," Babul said in a complaint lodged with the same police station Saturday. As Manjila failed to pay the money, Bibhash was shown arrested on March 2 in connection with a robbery and murder case at the house of retired marine engineer Abdul Haq on Road-18 in Sector-4 of Uttara. As the matter caught the attention of police authorities concerned, police arrested SI Hashem and police informant Shafiq at 2:45am yesterday. Producing Hashem before the Court of Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM), Dhaka, Uttara police sought a five-day remand. Metropolitan Magistrate Jagannath Das Khokan granted a two-day remand. Meanwhile, Ujjal, a man who collects clients for insurance companies in Sylhet, brought Abul Hossain, who runs a large departmental store at Madina Market in Sylhet, to Dhaka on Friday promising him of lucrative business deals. Ujjal convinced him to bring Tk 10 lakh and introduced him to Toufiq and Kamran at the White House Hotel in Shantinagar in the city. Ujjal took the bag containing Abul Hossain's money when Abul Hossain went to buy a betel leaf. During that time, the three left the spot leaving Abul Hossain. Ujjal and Kamran boarded a police van while Toufiq got on a rickshaw and went ahead of the police van. Returning to Sylhet, Abul met Ujjal's family members who failed to give his whereabouts. He came back to Dhaka yesterday morning and filed a case with Paltan Police Station. Learning PSI Tanvir Hossain Tuhin and ASI Shah Aziz were on duty at the place during the incident, detectives arrested them later in the day. Paltan police later produced the two before the CMM court. The court turning down their bail prayers sent them to jail.
