Gas Field
Bibiyana goes into trial run today

The US oil company Chevron starts trial gas production at the much talked about Bibiyana Gas Field of block 12 in the country today.

The formal inauguration of the gas filed is scheduled for March 8.

When operational, the gas field will pump 200 million cubic feet per day (mmcfd) to the national gas grid. Chevron will raise this supply to 400-500 mmcfd by the end of 2008, an official claimed. A 90-kilometre pipeline from the gas field to Muchhai has also been completed for this purpose.

The Bibiyana Gas Field is considered the country's second gas-rich field with a recoverable reserve of 2.4 trillion cubic feet. However, the probable reserve is 5.5 trillion cubic feet, a Chevron official claimed.

In late 2004, Chevron signed a Gas Purchase and Sales Agreement (GPSA) with Petrobangla to develop wells and produce natural gas from the Bibiyana Gas Field.

Through the acquisition of the company Unocal, Chevron also holds interests in three Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs) with Bangladesh. Two PSCs cover Blocks 12 (Bibiyana), 13 and 14 (Jalalabad Gas Field and Moulvibazar Field), and the third PSC covers Block 7. Chevron is the operator of all four blocks.

In early 2006, Chevron supplied 20 percent of Bangladesh's natural gas demand. Currently, the company is supplying 80-100 mmcfd to the national grid from five wells in Moulvibazar Gas Field and about 140-150 mmcfd from the Jalalabad Gas Field.
