Gas pipe blast snaps supply at Posta

The supply of gas and electricity was suspended for eight hours at Posta in Lalbagh and its surrounding areas in the capital yesterday following an explosion at a cracked gas pipe that spread panic among the locals.Locals said a gas pipe at 69, Waterworks Road, near an Agrani Bank branch office, was seen leaking gas and water around 7:30am. Locals informed officials of Titas Gas and three workers went to the spot at 9:30am and started digging the ground. As the workers struck the cracked gas pipe, the gas ignited. Panic seized the people of the area and the fire brigade was called in. It took seven fire engines of the fire brigade to get the fire under control. Nurul Haque, assistant director of Fire Brigade and Civil Defence, Dhaka City, said valuables of the Agrani Bank branch were removed fearing the fire might spread. He said the continuous efforts of the fire service and Titas Gas employees helped to put the flame out without any major damage.
