Property of ex-MP Mohiuddin seized; more relief goods recovered

Joint forces yesterday arrested a former Awami League lawmaker in Magura, recovered over 200 pieces of corrugated iron (CI) sheets for state relief from different parts of the country and 1,700 litres of diesel stockpiled at houses of two ex-UP members in Satkhira. Joint forces arrested former member of parliament (MP) and district vice-president of Awami League (AL) advocate Beeren Sikder from his residence in the town. Beeren was arrested in a case filed on March 3 by Abdur Rashid against 19 persons including the former MP and his brother, reports our correspondent. Police sources said, in October 2004, residents of Natopara village in Kaliganj upazila beat up Abdur Rashid and gouged both of his eyes out. Police produced Beeren before a magistrate's court where magistrate Shibani Bhattacharya rejected his bail petition and sent him to jail. Beeren Shikder told The Daily Star that the case was just a conspiracy against him and he had never been involved with the incident. MUNSHIGANJ A task force of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) yesterday seized the house and other goods belonging to former AL lawmaker Mohammad Mohiuddin -- one of the 50 ACC listed graft suspects, our correspondent reports. Mohiuddin had failed to submit his wealth statement to the ACC, Police said. At around 2:30pm, the task force went to Mohiuddin's residence at Courtgaon that he had inherited from his father and seized all goods therein including seven television sets, 10 refrigerators, 11 beds and 32 other items. Besides, an older model automobile was taken to the nearby police station. Officer-in-Charge of Courtgaon Police Station SA Newaz said none but the caretaker of the house was present during the raid. Two of Mohiuddin's bank accounts with Sonali Bank, Munshiganj branch were also frozen with Tk 35 lakh balance. SATKHIRA The army-led joint forces in separate drives recovered some 1,700 litres of diesel stockpiled in houses of two former Union Parishad (UP) members at Padmasri village in sadar upazila on Saturday, reports UNB. Acting on a tip-off, the joint forces raided the house of ex-UP member Abdus Sobhan and recovered 11,00 litres of diesel while in another raid they recovered 600 litres of diesel from the house of former UP member Abu Saleq. The joint forces said the two unscrupulous men hoarded the fuel for smuggling out to India. KUSHTIA The joint forces arrested Mirpur Pourasabha chairman and upazila president of BNP Saiful Huq Khan Chowdhury from his office yesterday under the Special Powers Act. Earlier on February 13, the detective branch of police arrested Chowdhury, but later he was released on bail. Police said Chowdhury, an associate of former BNP MP Shahidul Islam, is accused of murder, patronizing terrorists and stealing railway sleepers. NETRAKONA The joint forces recovered 59 pieces CI sheets meant for the destitute from houses and business establishments of three BNP leaders in Kendua and Purbadhala upazilas of the district yesterday morning. The joint forces also recovered 16 pieces CI sheets from the house of BNP leader Joynal Abadin at Narayandohor village in Purbadhala upazila, our correspondent reports quoting police sources. In another drive, the joint forces recovered 19 pieces of CI sheets from the business establishment of BNP leader Matiur Rahman at Nuapara bazar and 24 pieces CI sheets from the house of BNP leader Habibur Rahman at Tabiorgati village in Kendua upazila. Police said upazila BNP joint convenor Shyamal Chandra, ex-vice-president Abdur Rashid and Dewanganj poura BNP president Manzurul Haq Manzu were picked up late night from a gambling spot near the rail station. All of them were intoxicated at that time. Shyamal, also CBA president of Jheel Bangla Sugar Mill, and his two associates are terrorist kingpins. They amassed enormous wealth through illegal means during the previous government. When produced to the court yesterday, the court rejected their bail petitions and sent them to prison. RANGPUR Police recovered 157 CI sheets for relief from different areas in Gangachara upazila during the last two days. Police yesterday raided the houses of Rajkumar, Profulla Chandra, Boikuntha, Amzad, and Sudhir from North Kholea under Gangachara upazila and recovered a total of 107 CI sheets from roofs of their houses, reports our correspondent. Earlier on Saturday night, Gangachara police recovered 50 CI sheets from the house of Abdul Latif at Kholea. Latif is a teacher of Pakuria Sharif High School.
