Children display artistic skills through posters

To mark the occasion of International Women's Day 2007, Bangladesh Human Rights Advocacy Programme (BHRAP) under Academy for Educational Development (AED), with the support of USAID, organised a Children Poster Art Competition at the Art Gallery of the Bangladesh Shishu Academy on March 3. Susan Ward, Chief of Party, AED/BHRAP and Dr Farida Zaman of the Institute of Fine Arts were the special guest and chief guest respectively. The Jury Committee comprised of Professor Qayyum Chowdhury, Professor Hashem Khan, Dr Farida Zaman and Samina Nafies. With the theme Gender Equality, the slogan was 'Equality for Women and Men in Development' the competition hosted at least 200 students from all levels of socio-economic background from 45 institutions. Differently-abled children from Underprivileged Children's Educational Programmes (UCEP), Podokkhep, Manobik Unnayan Kendra, the Deaf and Dumb School, Ain O Salish Kendra and others also participated in the competition. The participants were divided into three age groups. In her message at the ceremony, special guest Susan Ward said that the primary focus of AED/BHRAP was child rights and their freedom of thought and expression. This competition gave a unique opportunity for children of all ages to express their views on equal rights for women, development of women, and women in different male-oriented professions. As Jasmine Jui, one of the child artists at the competition said, "I am drawing a courtroom scene with a female judge." Out of each of the groups, three prizes will be given at an award ceremony on March 9 at Hotel Sonargaon. Other than that each of the registered children were given certificates and token gifts of books and poster colours. Fifteen poster artworks will be selected from each group and a total of 45 posters will be published in an attractive catalogue.
