A nostalgia-studded celebration
Golden jubilee of Agrani Girls High School

Childhood is a time of restrictions, rules and regulations. All the young ones want is to grow up. The opposite holds true for adults; they want to go back to the best time of their lives -- childhood. There was an ambience of bygone era, memories and nostalgia at the open-air programme on March 2 as one of the oldest schools of Dhaka, Agrani Girls High School, celebrated their golden jubilee. While warm greetings, surprised recognition and a search for familiar faces was on, celebrity alumni including Afroza Banu, Sadya Afreen Mallick, Tarana Halim, Fahmida Nabi, Samina Nabi, Jaya Ahsan, Chandni, Srabonti, Riya, Samia Rahman, Mithila Farzana and Tropa Majumdar attended the event. Pragna Laboni and Nazia Jabeen conducted the show. Abdun Noor Tushar was also present as the 'son-in-law of the school' -- a lighthearted reference to his marriage to one of the ex-students. Going down memory lane, all these artistes had something to share with the 2,000 plus audience. Stories of a carefree childhood, running around the school fields, eating junk food, punishment by teachers became cherished memories. Pragna Laboni attributed her success to the teachers. In Tarana Halim's words, "I'm meeting many of my old teachers who I was really scared of back then. Though I still respect them, somehow they don't look so scary to me any more." From morning onwards there were cultural performances by the students of the school. In the second quarter of the programme, Sadya Afreen Mallick began with an inspirational Brotochari song Manush haw manush haw, abar tora manush haw. Amidst cheers and applause Samina Nabi rendered Amar majhey nei ekhon ami, her popular song from the film Ranikuthir Baki Itihash. In an informal atmosphere Chandni and Tarana Halim danced to the song. TV newscasters Samina Rahman and Mithila Farzana did a short news clip on the programme as Nazia Jabeen joined in as a reporter sending the audience into fits of laughter. Fahmida Nabi sang Monta jodi hoto tomar. Two choirs ended this leg of the event. The finishing touch was performance by the band Souls, who rocked the crowd till 10:00pm with their familiar songs E emon porichoy, Juth jhamela, Keno ei nishshongota and more. Asked about their reaction to the golden jubilee ceremony, a group of students could only stutter through their excitement, "Great!"
