3 killed in road crashes

At least three people were killed and 11 others injured in separate road accidents in Kishoreganj and Patuakhali yesterday and Friday.

Our Kishoreganj correspondent adds: Two people were killed and another one was injured in a road accident at Komolpur bus stand under Bhairab sadar upazila yesterday.

The dead were identified as Taramia, 60, and Rafiq Mia, 40, while the injured was Jasim Uddin, 30.

All the victims hail from Jagannathpur village of Bhairab upazila.

Locals and police said the accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound bus rammed a rickshaw coming from opposite direction near Komolpur bus stand.

Rickshaw passengers Taramia and Rafiq died on the spot while rickshawpuller Jasim was injured critically.

He was rushed to Bhairab Upazila Hospital, locals said.

The agitating people damaged three buses standing at the bus stand to protest reckless driving that caused the accident.

Officer-in-Charge of Bhairab Police Station Jamir Uddin said they have seized the bus but the driver and helpers managed to flee.

Our correspondent from Patuakhali says: One passenger was killed and 10 others were injured in two road accidents on Patuakhali-Barisal Road on Friday night and Saturday morning.

The victim was identified as Menaz Uddin, 50, of Gabua village under sadar upazila.

Eyewitnesses said a Patuakhali-bound bus knocked down Menaz when he was crossing the road at Gabua at 8:00am.

He died on the spot.

In another accident, 10 passengers were injured when a Patuakhali-bound bus from Baufal fell into a roadside ditch at Pagla bazar after the driver had lost control of the steering at about 9:00pm.

All the injured were given first aid at Domki Upazila Health Complex.
