Call to free environmental activist Shahidul

Bangladesh Paribesh Andolon (Bapa) has appealed to the caretaker government to immediately release environmental, developmental and human rights activist Shahidul Islam, if there is no specific allegation against him.

In a statement yesterday, Bapa General Secretary Mahidul Haq Khan expressed concern over the arrest of Shahidul Islam, executive director of Uttaran, a Satkhira-based NGO, saying that Shahidul was arrested a month ago, but it has been learnt that no specific allegation has been made against him.

As a developmental activist, Shahidul has made significant contribution to social movement and development activities in the southwestern region of the country, he added.

Shahidul was arrested by the joint forces from Tala upazila on January 27. Later, he was sent to jail with one month's detention.
