MU to take on rest of Europe

David Beckham will return to Old Trafford next month when Manchester United take on the best of European football in a special match celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, which set up the modern-day European Union.

Real Madrid, and future Los Angeles Galaxy, star Beckham will line up alongside Liverpool's Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher in the European side which will be coached by Italian world cup winner Marcello Lippi, assisted by former Scotland manager Andy Roxburgh, the European Commission announced on Tuesday.

Also named in the select UEFA XI squad are Lyon and France duo Eric Abidal and Gregory Coupet. The match also marks 50 years of the Red Devils' involvement in European competitions.

The final teamsheets will be announced in Brussels on March 12, the day before the match, at a press conference with European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, new UEFA president Michel Platini and Manchester United legend Bobby Charlton.

All proceeds from the evening match, on Tuesday March 13, will go to charity, with the tickets available from the Manchester United website.
