Babul's bail petition rejected

A Dhaka court yesterday rejected a bail petition of detained Jamuna Group Chairman Nurul Islam Babul in a case field against him for anti-state activities and illegally possessing public and private properties.

Judge (In-charge) Mohammad Nazrul Islam of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's Court passed the order following a criminal appeal by Babul's lawyers against a rejection order of the lower court on February 23.

In his order, the judge said the charges brought against Babul were primarily found to be true.

Police arrested Babul soon after he came out of the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) office on February 22 after submitting wealth statement.

Later he was sent to Dhaka Central Jail with one-month detention after he was produced before the Court of Chief Metropolitan the next day.

Gulshan police accused Babul, owner of Bangla daily Jugantor, of anti-state activities, causing financial losses to the country and illegally grabbing public and private properties.

He was on the ACC's list of 50 people, who were asked by the commission to submit wealth statements within 72 hours after receiving notifications.
