500 more CI sheets of relief seized


The joint forces arrested two local leaders of BNP and its youth wing Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal for possessing corrugated iron (CI) sheets meant for relief in Netrakona and Lalmonirhat and recovered 497 such sheets from across the country yesterday.

Police and Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) arrested 1,683 others who include 42 convicted in different criminals cases, 976 wanted criminals and 19 others accused in arms and explosives acts in 24 hours ending at 6:00am yesterday, said a home ministry press release.

Members of the armed forces arrested 52 people including 35 criminals during the period.

In Khulna, the joint forces recovered 300 government CI sheets for relief from BNP leader Motiur Rahman Moti's sawmill behind Baikali Cinema Hall in Khalishpur.

In Netrakona, the joint forces recovered 113 CI sheets from Madan and Purbadhala upazilas on Tuesday night.

Of the sheets, 83 were seized from the house of BNP leader Azizul Haque of Balali village in Madan upazila and arrested him.

The forces also seized 22 CI sheets from BNP leader Abdullah Master's house in the same village and another eight pieces from BNP leader Motahar Hossain's house at Shaldiga village in Purbadhala upazila.

In Narayanganj, security forces recovered 39 CI sheets of government relief and 18 poles abandoned by local BNP leader and Dhuptara Union Parishad Chairman Ruhul Amin.

In Benapole, Rab men recovered 20 CI sheets from Jubo Dal leader Shafiqul's house in Narayanpur village yesterday morning.

In Lalmonirhat, joint forces seized 17 CI sheets from the house of district BNP leader and former assistant public prosecutor advocate Habibur Rahman at Namatari in the town yesterday noon.

Earlier the forces seized eight CI sheets from a rice shop at Goshala Bazar in the town and arrested shop owner Pintu, who is also a worker of Jubo Dal.

The joint forces arrested Chapa Babu alias Maker Babu, a close aide to former deputy minister for food and disaster management Asadul Habib Dulu, from the gate of Lalmonirhat jail yesterday noon when he was getting out of the jail on bail.

Army men arrested Babu, who is facing several criminal charges, a month ago.

A Sylhet court yesterday placed city BNP chief Ariful Haque Chowdhury and Moulvibazar Pourashava Chairman Foyzul Karim Moyun on one-day remand for interrogation in an extortion case filed by contractor Nuruzzaman.

One of the 50 corruption suspects, Ariful Haque surrendered to the Army camp at Sylhet stadium on February 25 and was sent to Sylhet central jail the same day.

Moyun was sent to jail on February 20 when he surrendered before the Sylhet Sadar Magistrate's Court in connection with the case.

Nuruzzaman filed the case on February 17 against Naser Rahman and seven others including Ariful Haque, Moyun and some officials of Roads and Highways Department.
