Eradicating Childhood Blindness
CSF calls upon community participation

Child Sight Foundation (CSF) funded by Sight Savers International (SSI) have been working to eliminate childhood blindness from Bangladesh for one year.

They are providing cataract operations for the affected children at free of cost. They have identified 5227 children with cataract in Dhaka division. Among them only 1200 child came to hospitals for cataract operation though it was provided free of cost.

There are old beliefs and attitude persist about cataract surgery.

Parents are reluctant to let their babies go through surgery thinking that the risks are too high. Cataract is the major cause of child blindness in our country and it is unfortunate that most of our people do not know that it is treatable.

Treatment of cataract in children is a matter of urgency as early surgery increases the likelihood of better vision. The cataract does not need to be mature for children.

If treatment is delayed, there is a risk of amblyopia (partial blindness) and irreversible visual impairment. A baby may go blind or remain blind simply for the lack of simple measures. So all these facts should be considered with great concern. Otherwise it will remain a threat to our nation.

SSI and CSF face many barriers in treating theses children of our society. They call for help and support from the community. They request all citizens of Bangladesh to come forward and proactively participate in this programme. They can help raising awareness or identifying a case of a blind child or referring a blind children to SSI and CSF from their sorrounding.
