Weeklong Jatiyo Patho Natok Utsab '07 begins

A seven-day Jatiyo Patho Natok Utsab 2007 (street theatre festival), scheduled to be inaugurated on February 1, began a day late at the Central Shaheed Minar premises due to unavoidable circumstances. Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation (BGTF), in association with Bengal Foundation, has arranged the festival. Presided over by Keramat Moula, the conveynor of the festival committee, the programme was inaugurated by noted theatre personality Ramendu Majumder after which a minute's silence was observed to pay homage to the language martyrs. Other theatre and cultural personalities such as Golam Kuddus, general secretary of Sammilito Sangskritik Jote; Jhuna Chow-dhury; general secretary of BGTF, Luva Nahid Chowdhury, managing director of Bengal Foundation and Akhter-uz-Zaman, assistant secretary general of BGTF delivered speeches at the opening session. The plays staged on the first day were Gupta Bidda by Samay Sangsritik Goshti (written by Dulendro Bhoumik and directed by Akhter-uz-Zaman), Khoar by Theatre Art Unit (written and directed by Saif Shumon) and Khepa Paglar Pechal by Songshoptak Nattyadal (written by SM Solaiman and directed by Sanaullah Haque). BGTF has been organising the annual festival in Dhaka for around 20 years. This year 50 theatre groups from within and outside Dhaka are expected to perform at the festival and each day five performances would be staged. The duration of the street plays is less than 40 minutes. The festival ends on February 8
