New CEC
Govt shelves plan to pick Anisuzzaman

The caretaker government (CG) is considering another former bureaucrat instead of M Anisuzzaman Khan for the office of the chief election commissioner (CEC), which felt vacant on January 21 following resignation of former CEC Justice MA Aziz.

"We are looking for a man with reputation and morality for the post to form a strong Election Commission," an adviser to the CG told The Daily Star yesterday on condition of anonymity.

He however did not disclose the name of the former bureaucrat who is going to be appointed as the new CEC.

President Iajuddin Ahmed is likely to appoint the new CEC and two other election commissioners today in line with the caretaker government's choice.

"I hope, the appointments will be completed either tomorrow or the day after," Law Adviser Mainul Hosein told The Daily Star yesterday.

The law adviser said the Election Commission (EC) will comprise three members including its chief.

A former military bureaucrat might be appointed as an election commissioner, sources said referring to the caretaker government's plan.

The last EC was dissolved on January 31 through resignations of the immediate past acting CEC and four other election commissioners.
