Assam Congress leader shot
Afp, Guwahati
A leader of the ruling Congress party was shot dead Thursday by rebels in northeast India, the fifth politician slain in attacks on the party in restive Assam state in two weeks, officials said. Abdul Basar, a 53-year-old Congress politician, was shot dead in a village about 280km east of Assam's main city Guwahati, police said. "Two cycle-borne militants shot at Basar from close range with automatic weapons, killing him on the spot," A. Das, a senior police official, told AFP by telephone.
