Mother commits suicide after feeding poison to daughter

A mother and her five-year-old daughter died as she herself took poison after feeding it to the little girl at their house at Araihazar in Naryanganj on Thursday.

Bilkis Begum, 22, and her daughter Tanjila died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital at around 7:00pm after the neighbours first rushed them to Araihazar Health Complex and then to the Dhaka.

The neighbours broke open the door of Bilkis's room at about 2:00pm when they heard the mother and the daughter groaning continuously. The windows of the room were also closed at that time.

Such act of Bilkis, wife of Iqbal Hossain, a rickshawpuller, took the neighbours and her family members by surprise.

Bilkis had been living a happy life with her husband for the last six years, her father Abul Hossain said yesterday.

There had been no such incidents in her family which can upset her, said Salma Begum, a neighbour.

Iqbal said her wife never complained about anything to him. So, it is still a mystery what prompted her to take such extreme measures, he added.
