Memo to Chief Adviser
Cancel Phulbari Coalmine Project

National Committee for Protection of Oil, Gas, Mineral Resources, Power, Port in a memorandum to the chief adviser on Thursday urged the caretaker government to fully cancel the Phulbari Coalmine Project, as the immediate past government's agreement with the committee on the project was just 'ceremonial'.

They also urged the interim government to take action against the persons who had been allegedly trying to renew old projects or sign new treaties before unearthing the irregularities and corruption.

They demanded publication of a white paper on the gas and coal sector that they said would bring about transparency in the sector.

In the memorandum titled Canceling Phulbari Project and Identification and Punishment of the Officials Involved In Corruption In Power And Energy Sector, the committee mentioned specific allegations against some former secretaries and ministers claiming that they were active in conspiracy to smuggle national resources to foreign companies.

Under some invisible pressure from a quarter, Phulbari project, with no environmental impact analysis got the clearance of environment ministry on ad-hoc basis for one year, which is already over, they said and demanded not to renew the tenure of the clearance.

They also suggested forming high-powered technical committee to assess all the deals under production sharing contract (PSC) in the gas sector and promote national interest.

A representative of the chief adviser received the memorandum signed by Committee Convener Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah and Member Secretary Prof Anu Muhammad.
