Shares traded in downbeat mood
Brac Bank pulled up indices

Although the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) finished with the benchmark index gaining moderately, most of the shares were traded last week in downbeat mood.On a week-on-week basis, the DSE General Index closed Thursday at 1826.58 points, up by 35.24 points or 1.97 percent over its close the previous week, while of the issues traded, only 49 closed in gains, 182 suffered losses and five remain unchanged. The DSE All Share Price Index, which includes all shares on the premier bourse, rose by 34.33 points, 2.35 percent, closing at 1495.47 points on the last trading day. Market analysts said mainly Brac Bank's share, which made its debut on the secondary market Wednesday, pulled up the stock indices significantly during the last couple of days of the week. The third generation bank got huge responses from the investors due to its good business track record, they said. The turnover, however, dropped by 20.02 percent. The total turnover on the DSE was Tk 486.43 crore last week against the previous week's Tk 608.20 crore. The trading took place in four days last week against five days of the previous week due to a public holiday on Tuesday on account of holy Ashura. Average daily turnover of the week was Tk 121. 60 crore compared to Tk 121.64 crore during the previous week, a 0.03 percent down. The DSE witnessed Wednesday a highest single day turnover with Tk 158.74 crore. On the DSE last week, the total transactions fell by 23.39 percent. A total of 95,955,077 shares of 263 issues were traded on the bourse, while 125,256,091 shares changed hands the previous week. The top ten turnover leaders of the week were Brac Bank, Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB), Dhaka Electric Supply Company, Grameen Mutual Fund One, AIMS First Mutual Fund, Square Textile, Jamuna Bank, Summit Power, Pubali Bank and Southeast Bank. Brac Bank topped the list of turnover leaders with 1,535,000 shares worth Tk 80.61 crore, accounting for 16.57 percent of the total market turnover. On the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE), a total of 19,873,641 shares of 133 issues worth Tk 116.45 crore were traded. Of the issues traded, 37 advanced, 80 declined and 15 remain unchanged. At the end of the week, the CSE All Share Price Index went down by 0.25 percent to close at 4078.65 points while the CSE Selective Categories Index dropped by 0.26 percent finishing at 2674.51 points. The top ten turnover leaders of the week were Brac Bank, PGCB, Rupali Bank, AB Bank, IFIC Bank, Southeast Bank, Bextex, Square Textiles, Jamuna Bank and Grameen Mutual Fund One. Brac Bank topped the turnover list with 349,200 shares worth Tk 18.16 crore. At the end of week, the market capitalisation on the DSE stood at Tk 37,931 crore while the capitalisation on the CSE stood at Tk 30,456 crore.
