MRCA to start issuing licence to NGOs next month

Micro-credit Regulatory Authority (MCRA) will start issuing licence to the NGOs from next month, as a meeting of the authority decided yesterday.

MCRA will also constitute an expert group soon to formulate guidelines to regulate the NGOs, now running without any regulation.

Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, also chairman of MCRA, presided over the meeting held at the bank.

"The authority will consider the number of members or micro-credit borrowers to issue the licence," an official who attended the meeting told the news agency.

He said any NGO having less than the specified number of borrowers will not be provided with the licence but it will be able to operate for a certain period.

The MCRA meeting, however, could not finalise the limit of members or borrowers to be required for getting the licence.
