Detention of Dastagir
HC rule on govt
Court Correspondent
The High Court (HC) yesterday issued a rule asking the government to explain within two weeks why the detention of Dastagir Chowdhury, former deputy mayor of Chittagong City Corporation and BNP leader, should not be declared illegal and void. The bench comprising Justice Abdul Wahab Miah and Justice Emdadul Haq passed the order following a writ petition filed by Dastagir's cousin Kazi Rafiqul Islam challenging the legality of the arrest, says a press release. Law enforcement agencies arrested Dastagir from his Chittagong residence on January 16. Later, he was given a one-month detention on January 22 under the Special Powers Act 1974. Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal and advocates Towfiq Inam Tipu and Gazi Mahmuda Akhter Luky moved the petition on behalf of the petitioner.
