Rajshahi mayor files defamation suit against Prothom Alo

Rajshahi City Corporation Mayor Mizanur Rahman Minu yesterday lodged a defamation suit with Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's (CMM) Court against the leading Bangla daily Prothom Alo. Minu sued Editor Motiur Rahman, Publisher Mahfuz Anam and Reporter Kamrul Hasan for running a report on Tuesday terming him as a 'godfather' of Islamic militants. The CMM Afzal Hossain ordered the officer-in-charge of Boalia police station to investigate into the case and submit a report by March 2. The court also fixed March 4 as the next date for hearing of the case. According to the Prothom Alo report, the mayor helped Siddikul Islam alias Bangla Bhai in his militant activities in Rajshahi in 2004 and also offered him money.
