Glimpses of life and times of Rafiqun Nabi

Smritir Thikana, a documentary on the life and work of Rafiqun Nabi, a leading artist of Bangladesh, was screened at Bengal Shilpalaya on December 3. The film is directed by renowned documentary filmmaker Manjare Hasin Murad and produced by Bengal Foundation. In the film, Rafiqun Nabi talks about his environment and its impact on his development as an artist. He also gives details of some of his paintings. His dreams or visions are also stated in the film. The documentary begins with a picturesque rural scene and reflects a series of interesting images--the Dhaleshwari river in Manikganj, fishermen casting their nets, children diving into rivers and golden paddy fields. Apart from Nabi's childhood, there are glimpses of other landmarks such the formation of Charukala Institute by noted artist Zainul Abedin. The film ends with the Tagore song Phirey chol matir taney The music in the film --largely the santoor and the flute--casts a spell on listeners. Behind the camera is Maksudul Bari. Bengal Foundation makes a documentary for almost every exhibition held at Bengal Shilpalaya. Bengal has taken the initiative to document major artists' work and their views for future generations. The Foundation has already produced 25 documentaries and hopes to continue such projects in the future.
