'Step up AIDS awareness campaign'

Different organisations observed the World AIDS Day across the country yesterday with the slogan 'Stop AIDS, keep the promise'.

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters' Association (BGMEA) in association with UNFPA organised a rally at a city community centre which was attended by more than 400 garment workers.

BGMEA Vice-President Harun-or-Rashid said although AIDS is yet to become endemic in Bangladesh for religious practices, awareness programmes among the workers must be intensified.

UNFPA Programme Associate Asma Akhtar explained how the organisation has been working with BGMEA in the field of ensuring reproductive health among the workers. Besides, she highlighted the measures of preventing the disease.

Umme Salma Parvin, on behalf of the workers, however, urged the authorities to provide AIDS diagnosis facilities at BGMEA health centre.

BGMEA-UNFPA Project Director Prof Aminul Islam presented the welcome speech while Probir Kanti Das, BGMEA additional secretary and deputy project director, moderated the programme.

Meanwhile, 2nd Urban Primary Health Care Project (UPHCP) and Population Services & Training Centre (PSTC) jointly organised a workshop at PSTC auditorium.
