Next election very crucial for Bangladesh's progress
Says Japan envoy; meets Khaleda, Hasina


Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Masayuki Inoue called on Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina at Sudha Sadan yesterday.

After the meeting, the envoy told newsmen that the upcoming national election is very crucial for development and progress of Bangladesh.

Inoue said he had elaborate discussion with Sheikh Hasina about holding of a free, fair and credible election in Bangladesh. "I urged the Awami League chief to extend her cooperation to holding a free and neutral election," he added.

Referring to 35 years of uninterrupted cooperation and assistance of his country for Bangladesh's development initiatives, the envoy said not only Japan but also all other development partners of Bangladesh are worried about its future development

He said the present political situation in Bangladesh is not conducive to its progress and prosperity.

When asked if a free and fair poll is possible with the existing voter list having over 1crore fake names, Inoue said, "It's not our outlook, the people of Bangladesh are the best judges to decide on this issue."

Sheikh Hasina's Political Secretary Saber Hossain Chowdhury and Personal Secretary Dr Awlad Hossain were also present.

UNB adds: The Japanese envoy called on BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at Hawa Bhaban last night.

During the meeting, the BNP chairperson told the envoy that her party is committed to peace and democracy, and wants to resolve the present political standoff within the ambit of the constitution.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, the Japanese ambassador told the reporters that he expected and hoped that "political instability would be resolved as soon as possible".
