LDP Man Lobbying for Ticket
Satkhira-1 AL men won't'give away' seat to ally
Abu Ahmed, Satkhira
Awami League leaders in Satkhira-1 (Tala and Kalaroa upazilas) are unhappy over the party's possibility of forming an electoral alliance with Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) led by dissident BNP leader Prof. AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury. They said they will not 'surrender' the seat to LDP in the name of a grand alliance. Syed Didar Bakht, former state minister in Ershad's government, recently joined LDP from BNP and is lobbying for ticket to contest from Satkhira-1 in the coming election. Local AL leaders said LDP can not demand the seat as the party has neither formed a committee nor it has workers at grassroots level, Tala upazila AL president Sheikh Nurul Islam said while talking to this correspondent. Local leaders and activists of 14-party alliance are opposing Didar, said Satkhira district AL organising secretary Abdul Hamid, who is also a man from Kalaroa upazila. Failing to join AL, Syed Didar Bakht joined LDP, he claimed. "We will not surrender the seat to any other party as it is a stronghold of AL", said Tala upazila AL general secretary Sanat Kumar. He urged AL chief Sheikh Hasina to nominate a party man to contest from Satkhira-1. "Our organisation in the constituency is very strong and there are several thousand grassroots level workers. The 14-party alliance will be able to retain the seat if an AL man is nominated", said Satkhira district AL vice-president M Fazlul Haque, also from Tala upazila. "We have strong candidate to contest from Satkhira-1 constituency and will not accept any other candidate", he added. Syed Didar Bakht has lost his image due to changing party frequently. Many people in the area call him an opportunist politician, said Zakir Hossain, a AL leader in Tala. Satkhira district AL president Engineer Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is an aspirant for 14-party allianec ticket from Stakhira-1, party sources said. "We will not 'surrender' the seat to LDP at any cost. We want to see an AL nominee", Satkhira district AL general secretary Nazrul Islam said. On contact, Didar Bakht said he is trying to get party ticket.
