Khulna mayor to consider other options if Ashraf gets party ticket

Khulna City Corporation Mayor Sheikh Tayabur Rahman yesterday said he would consider other options if former whip and party colleague Ashraf Hossain gets nomination from Khulna- 3 constituency in the upcoming parliament election.

"It is my democratic right to make a fresh decision if the party fails to take a correct decision in nominating party candidate," he said this in a written statement to newsman at a hotel in the capital.

Tayabur said, "I am alerting the party high command to nominate competent people to fight the election."

He however declined to make any comment on the possibility of his joining the Liberal Democratic Party floated by dissident BNP leaders AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury and Oli Ahmad.

When the reporters asked him abut the possible decision that he may take if he fails to get party nomination, the mayor said he would decide it later on.

"I could also retire from the politics," he remarked, but said he would finalise his decision after December 8, the probable date to declare the names of BNP candidates.

Tayabur expressed his support for Ali Asgar Lobi for Khulna 2 constituency, but did not make any comment about Khulna-4.

In reply to a question, the mayor said he has already submitted the nomination form for the consideration of party high command to get the nomination for the next general election.

The mayor however said he would accept anyone other than Ashraf as party nominee for Khulna- 3 constituency.

Khulna city unit BNP leader Akhtaruzzaman and Shah-ruzzaman Murtoza, Ward Commissioner Hafizur Rahman, Gawsul Azam, Kazi Mohammad Rashed and Aman Ullah Aman were present at the press briefing.
