'President pushes country into confrontation'

Leaders of Combined Citizens Movement (CCM) yesterday said the president is pushing the country into confrontation in the name of constitution though he still holds the post of chief adviser violating the constitution.

They said the appointment of two 'controversial' election commissioners in the Election Commission by the president ignoring the advisers has proved that he is working to bring a particular party or alliance to power.

The CCM leaders were speaking at a rally in front of Jibon Bima Building in the city while observing the countrywide blockade programme enforced by the 14-party alliance.

They alleged that the president is hatching a conspiracy to make the election a farce and urged him to resign from the post of the chief adviser for the sake of the country.

If the president takes 24 hours to discuss with the chiefs of two major alliances over tea, then when he will perform his other jobs, they questioned.

Principal Abdul Ahad Chowdhury, member of CCM steering committee, Dr Kazi Faruk Ahmed, secretary general of Oikyaboddho Nagorik Andolon, Dr AK Azad Chowdhury, former vice-chancellor of Dhaka University, Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique, former president of Dhaka University Teachers' Association, Golam Kuddus, co-ordinator of CCM and Dr Kamrul Hasan Khan, member secretary of Peshajibi Samunnay Parishad, also spoke on the occasion.
