4-party agrees to change in EC commissioners
Remains rigid on election date

The BNP-led four-party alliance has responded positively to the package of proposals set forth by the caretaker government and agreed to have the Election Commission (EC) recast by sending two controversial election commissioners on leave while appointing two new ones.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia at a meeting last evening with three advisers-- Justice Fazlul Huq, CM Shafi Sami and Mahbubul Alam-- agreed to accept the proposals placed before her, said a highly-placed source in the party.

The immediate past ruling party, however, remains determined to have the election held on January 21. They have agreed to change the other dates relating to the election, added the source.

Khaleda Zia has readily accepted the proposals for correction of the voter list till the day before the polling day and reconstitution of the EC by sending two commissioners -- SM Zakaria and Modabbir Hossain Chowdhury--on leave.

She has also agreed to the proposal for appointing two more commissioners -- reportedly one BNP-leaning and the other Awami League-leaning -- as proposed by the three advisers.

An influential leader of the BNP told The Daily Star in return for anonymity that the four-party alliance is ready to accept any proposal falling within the ambit of the constitution.

He said Khaleda Zia has consented also to reshuffle of the administration and the election officials at upazila level.

He said the advisers were apparently happy as the BNP chief has agreed to almost all the proposals placed by them.

"We are ready to accept any proposal made within the framework of the constitution, but we won't accept any that might violate the constitution. The election must be held within 90 days," the BNP leader added.

He said the BNP and its allies are sincere about holding of a free and fair election.

When asked about revision of the voter list as demanded by the 14-party alliance, the BNP leader said Khaleda Zia has told the advisers that "it's an impossible task and might take at least a month. The voter list could be corrected till the penultimate day, so there is no need to update the voter list afresh".
