Blockade must go before discussion
Staff Correspondent
BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan last night said the four-party alliance has no objection to making any changes in the polls schedule but it has strong reservations about shifting the January 21 polling date. Briefing reporters after a two-hour meeting between a four-party delegation and President Iajuddin Ahmed, he said they had told the president and the advisers to ask the 14-party to withdraw the fresh blockade before any discussion. "The election must be held within the stipulated time as there is not enough time to shift the date of polling," Bhuiyan told reporters at BNP Dhaka City unit office at Naya Paltan after the meeting with the chief adviser at Bangabhaban. BNP sources said the issue of Election Commission (EC) reconstitution also came up for discussion during the meeting and the BNP delegation told Iajuddin that the 'controversial' election commissioners could be changed through discussion but the 14-party will have to withdraw the blockade before any changes in the EC. But the BNP secretary general at the briefing did not make any comments on EC reconstitution or their talks with Iajuddin on the issue. Replying to a question on the 14-party demand for Iajuddin's resignation from the post of chief adviser, Bhuiyan said the question of accepting such demand does not arise at all. Terming the Awami League's position 'contradictory,' he said: "They [AL] are demanding his [Iajuddin) resignation in the street but went to Bangabhaban to meet him." Bhuiyan said they will finalise their decision after getting the list of 'latest demands' from the Awami League-led alliance and they will go to Bangabhaban again, if necessary. "They are raising demands one after another. We want an end to it." "We will respond after you let us know about the latest demands from the 14-party alliance," Bhuiyan quoted Khaleda as telling the president during the meeting. The BNP secretary general said, "We placed several demands to the president. We told him that the election process must continue and the election must be held on time. Besides, the blockade must be withdrawn for the sake of normal life of people." "The government has not yet taken any action against those who were involved in vandalism at the Supreme Court or those who set ablaze election offices throughout the country. So the law and order situation should be improved immediately," he said. "We want a solution to the current crisis," Bhuiyan said. Bhuiyan said they do not know the latest demands of the 14-party and they will appreciate if the president could let them know about the demands. He also said they [four-party] were willing to discuss these demands. About the NDI survey that detected fake voters on the electoral roll, Bhuiyan said such names could always be dropped since it is a continuous process and the voter list could be corrected until the election date. The Khaleda Zia-led delegation also included Mannan Bhuiyan, M Saifur Rahman, Dr Khandoker Mosharraf Hossain, Dr RA Ghani KM Obaidur Rahman, MK Anwar, Khondoker Delwar Hossain and Advocate Mahbub Uddin Ahmed from BNP. Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Motiur Rahman Nizami and Secretary General Ali Ahsan M Mujahid, Fazlul Huq Amini of Islami Oikya Jote and Naziur Rahman Manjur of the Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) were also in the delegation.
