Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation celebrates 26th anniversary

Cultural activists from different corners of the country gathered at Rabindra Sarobar, the open stage near Dhanmondi Lake on November 29 to celebrate the 26th anniversary of Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation (BGTF). This common platform of the theatre troupes of the country was set up in 1980. The organisation has the mandate to safeguard the professional interest of theatre personalities and to create opportunities for them; develop drama; free drama from bureaucratic control; mobilise public opinion against laws violating fundamental rights; take active steps to establish permanent stages in different parts of the country; nurture the ideology of group theatre; inform drama with social purpose; publish material related to theatre; establish a theatre museum; arrange work-shops at national and international levels; arrange national drama festivals; and adopt welfare programmes for people associated with theatre. The anniversary programme began with rendition of the National Anthem. Former Chief Justice Muhammad Habibur Rahman was the chief guest, while M Hamid was the chairperson of the programme, in which theatre personalities delivered speeches. The other attractions of the evening were music and street theatre. Activists of theatre troupes such as Aranyak, Loko Natya Dal, Udichi, Padatik Natya Sangsad and Natyajan presented natoker gaan. The final attraction of the anniversary programme was a street drama titled Nikhoj Nashika, a Shubochan Natya Sangsad production.
