Going back in time to the Battle: On June 21, 1941 the German army made a desperate attempt to capture Moscow. German General staff mapped out the Barbarossa plan to defeat the Red Army. It also planned to capture the Soviet territory; rich mineral resources, vast pastures, fields and cattle, villages, towns and cities. In 1941 the German Army was considered to be the strongest and most experienced army in the world. Within a short period of time, the Germans captured Republic of Bielorrusia and a huge portion of Russia and Ukraine and in late September found themselves at the far approaches to Moscow. The battle that lasted over six months was one of the greatest ever triumphs scored by the Soviet Red Army. The enemy's crushing defeat near Moscow dispelled the myth about their invincibility and marked a turning point in the history of World War II. The Battle of Moscow is considered one of the most important battles in the war between Germany and the USSR, primarily because the Soviets were able to successfully prevent the most serious attempt to capture their capital. The battle was also one of the largest during World War II, with more than a million total casualties. The event is more than just a photography exhibition and touches on many significant historical events of the Battle of Moscow. It displays a rich collection of the Battle of Moscow photographs. Among them are photographs of Alexei Zhirkov and his son Peter from the city of Nizhny Novgorod, who joined the Russian Army to defend Moscow, Red Army troops moving to Red Square in Moscow to take part in the military parade, military parade on Red Square in Moscow to mark 24th Anniversary of October 1917 revolution, scheme (map) of counter- offence of Red Army in 1941, a thrust of victory, Red Army moving forward to defend Moscow, heavy fighting near the city of Elnya, Moscow citizens digging an anti- tank ditch, an anti-aircraft battery on the rooftop of the Russian government building, fascist 'Super Man' surrender to Red Army solders, villagers welcoming Soviet Army advancement, Victory Day salute in Moscow and others.
