Bhim dies

Bhim, a 23-year-old Royal Bengal Tiger of Chittagong Zoo, died of old age complications early yesterday.

At the age of nine, the tiger was brought to Chittagong Zoo from Dhaka Zoo.

Bhim became a well known name following its escape from the cage in Dhaka Zoo in September 2002 and again in August 2003 from the Chittagong Zoo, creating panic around.

Usually tigers of this species live around 18 years, but Bhim survived a few years longer, said Dr Morshed of the zoo.

Bhim's female partner Shankari died after a surgery for breast tumour on October 1 in 2003, leaving two offspring Chandra, 9, and Purnima, 7, at the zoo.
