92nd anniversary of birth of Justice Debesh today
Today is the 92nd birth anniversary of Justice Debesh Bhattacharya, says a press release.He was born in a Zamindar family of Ellenga, Tangail, in 1914. Various programmes have been arranged at Ellenga to mark the day. Justice Bhattacharya is widely remembered for his involvement in defending democratic and human rights. He was an outstanding jurist and some of his verdicts had been historically precedent setting judgments. The founder-president of Bangladesh Enemy Property Act Repeal Committee, he was also a presidium member of Bangladesh Peace Council and member of the executive committee of Bangladesh Nagarik Committee. Justice Bhattacharya was also a member of Gono Adatlat (people's court) set up to put on trial the war criminals of 1971. He was the chairman of the Citizen's Commission set up to investigate the Jagannath Hall tragedy of October 15, 1985. He was a founding patron of Bangladesh Hindu Bouddha Christian Oikya Parishad, Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad and Mahanagar Sarbajanin Puja Committee. Justice Bhattacharya, who had donated all his law books to the Supreme Court Bar Association Library, had published four volumes of essays and a book of poems.
