Law firm asks Adviser Sufia to confirm her citizenship

A law firm, Barrister Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed & Associates, sent a letter to Adviser to the Caretaker Government Dr Sufia Rahman yesterday requesting her to confirm to the president that she does not hold dual citizenship.

According to the constitution, duel citizenship disqualifies one from being an adviser to the caretaker government.

The law firm sent the letter to Sufia Rahman following a report run by a Bengali newspaper claiming she holds the citizenship of UK.

Citing the constitution, the letter said, "Should the news report of your having citizenship of the United Kingdom be correct, you would not be eligible to be appointed as an adviser by the president."

"We would request you to kindly confirm to the honourable president that you do not hold dual citizenship, and as such are qualified to be appointed as an adviser by the president," the letter went on.

"Should you hold dual citizenship, it would be appropriate for you to forthwith relinquish your post as adviser," the letter added.

Sufia was given charge of the ministries of health and family welfare, labour and employment and expatriate welfare and overseas employment.
