EC reconstitution demand appears new to Bhuiyan

BNP Secretary General Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan said 14-party coalition's demand for restructuring the Election Commission (EC) is 'new' to him.

Terming the demand a 'new one' the BNP secretary general, in a press briefing yesterday morning in his party's central office at Naya Paltan in the capital, categorically said, "There is no scope in the constitution to take any action against anyone in the EC."

Welcoming the newly appointed advisers to the caretaker government, Mannan Bhuiyan said the interim government will hold a general election in three months time and appointing the advisers was a step forward to that direction.

"All of them are neutral, non-partisan, respected citizens of the country and I think the appointments were not made on the basis of their political leanings," he said about the advisers to the caretaker government.

"I hope the caretaker government will give us a free, fair and neutral election," he said in reply to a question of a reporter adding that his party will help the interim government in holding an election in a free and fair manner. He urged all political parties to help the interim government.

When asked about the 11-point charter of demands of the Awami League-led coalition, which includes the demand for restructuring the EC, Bhuiyan said he does not know whether it is possible to fulfil the demand but the president will decide.

"But, I do not condone the practice of making ultimatums," he said adding that there would be no need of an election if all demands of AL could be fulfilled. They (AL) may realise all their demands after the election if they win, he said.

Restructuring the EC is one of the main demands of 14-party coalition and it has been agitating to realise the demand for a long time. Civil society leaders and most of the non-political organisations also demanded restructuring of the EC for holding an acceptable election.

Blaming AL for the recent violence in the country, the BNP leader said because of their programme of bringing sticks and oars to the capital many people died and 14-party coalition leaders will have to bear the responsibility for the killings.

Terming the latest reshuffle in the administration a 'routine work' he said it is usual for a caretaker government to take such steps.

About the controversy regarding assumption of the office of the chief adviser by the president he said, "The president took the charge constitutionally and by taking the decision he saved the nation from a constitutional crisis."

Urging all to help the caretaker government and to refrain from any provocative programme he asked them to help establish a peaceful environment for holding a free and fair election.

BNP Joint Secretary General Ghoyeshshor Chandra Ray, Nazrul Islam Khan, Ahmed Musa, and Emran Saleh Prince were also present among others.
