Twenty-one day theatre festival to begin soon

Good news for theatre lovers. The Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation (BGTF) has arranged a 21-day theatre festival at the two theatre halls of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The festival begins on December 1 at the National Theatre Stage and the Experimental Theatre Stage. In the course of the programme, 20 theatre troupes from Dhaka and 20 others from various parts of the country will stage plays. After the successful 37-day theatre festival titled 'Dhaka Drama Festival' in 2004, which was arranged by BGTF to popularise Experimental Theatre Stage, this is the second grand arrangement by the organisation. M Hamid, the chairperson of BGTF, asserted, "The festival gives theatre goers a scope to view the best contemporary theatre performances. What's more is that it will introduce National Theatre Stage as a popular venue--during the festival the hall rent of National Theatre Stage will be only Taka 5,000, which was earlier beyond the reach of most theatre troupes." On the selection process of the plays in the festival, Hamid pointed out that the troupes from Dhaka will stage both popular and new productions. A committee will undertake the primary selection from the BGTF member troupes from all over the country. And then the BGTF central committee will select the 20 plays from the primary selection. Commenting on the reason for holding the theatre festival in December, Hamid said, "We usually try to celebrate Victory Day by organising many cultural events. The dry season is suitable for the viewers also. Moreover, the country is in throes of a political crisis, which will hopefully be resolved in due course."
