IO seeks deferral of journo Belal murder trial

Investigating Officer (IO) of journalist Belal murder case Abdul Hamid filed a petition on Monday with the Third Court of Additional District Judge, Khulna, praying for deferring trial of the case.

The IO, who is also officer-in-charge of Khulna police station, sought more time for further investigation, sources said.

The court has fixed November 23 for hearing the petition.

Shaikh Belaluddin, Khulna bureau chief of Dainik Sangram, was severely injured in a bomb attack on the night of February 5 last year on Khulna Press Club premises. He died on February 11 at Combined Military Hospital in Dhaka.

The IO of the case earlier submitted charge sheet against six FIR-named accused. They included four alleged extremists, Jamaat-e-Islami leader Sahabuddin Lashkar alias Dhira and Islami Chhatra Shibir activist Ekhlasur Rahman.

Four out of six chargesheeted accused are in jail, while Dhira and Ekhlas are on bail.
