Traders observe hartal to protest political violence


Businessmen observed a half-day hartal in Kaliganj upazila headquarters yesterday protesting alleged vandalism by political activists during clashed between Awami League and BNP in previous three days.

They also brought out a procession and handed over a memorandum to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer demanding compensation for the damages and injury to some traders who were beaten by activists of the parties.

They also demanded steps by the administration to ensure security.

Sources in the local traders association claimed that 15 businessmen were injured and at least 50 shops looted during clashes when several bombs were blasted and shots exchanged.

At Tk 20 lakh goods were looted or damaged, the association's secretary Mofizur Rahman claimed while talking to this correspondent yesterday.
