JCD leader held with pistol, released

Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) yesterday caught a top leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), student wing of BNP, with a pistol at a checkpoint in the city's Sabujbagh area, but released later after examining the license of his firearm.Sources said Rab members at the checkpoint caught Habibur Rashid, Dhaka City (South)general secretary of the JCD, with a pistol at around 5:00pm when he was passing the area. "We caught Habibur at a checkpoint and released him later finding the license of the pistol valid," Major Javed of Rab-3 told The Daily Star. Local sources said the validity period of the license expired, as it was not renewed. A minister of immediate-past four-party alliance government from the area went to the spot to release the JCD leader, the source added. Javed, however, said they released the man finding license of his firearm valid. He also said no minister went to the spot.
