Nagorik Committee urges CA to reconstitute EC


The Nagorik Committee 2006 yesterday urged the chief adviser to the caretaker government to implement the committee's recommendations regarding reconstitution of the Election Commission (EC) and correcting the electoral roll for the upcoming general election.

The committee at a meeting held at the CPD dialogue room in the capital observed with great concern that doubts have arisen in the mind of citizens about observance of the constitutional steps and transparency in the process of appointment of the chief adviser.

In the present circumstances it is extremely important that the president and the head of the caretaker government will perform his functions in the most transparent manner to evoke confidence in public mind, the meeting observed.

"To ensure a free and fair elections it is expected that the caretaker government will take steps as soon as possible to implement the recommendations of the Nagorik Committee 2006 made public earlier regarding reconstitution of the Election Commission and correcting the electoral roll," said the committee.

The Nagorik Committee will continue to strengthen public support for the recommendations formulated on the basis of regional dialogues over the past few months.

Chaired by M Syeduzzaman, co-convenor of the Nagorik Committee 2006, the meeting was attended by Anisuzzaman, Samson H Chowdhury, M Mujibul Huq, Mahmuda Islam, Laila Rahman Kabir, Sultana Kamal, M Hafizuddin Khan and ASM Shahjahan. Debapriya Bhattacharya facilitated the meeting as member secretary of the committee.
