'Govt misappropriates Tk 14,000 cr in 5 years'

During the last five years, BNP-Jamaat alliance government misappropriated around Tk 14,000 crore only through corruption in the power sector, said leaders of National Committee for the Protection of Oil-Gas-Power-Port at a press conference at Dhaka Reporters' Unity auditorium in the city yesterday.If this huge amount of money had been spent properly, Bangladesh could have set up a couple of power plants capable of producing 3000 megawatt (MW) electricity whereas the country has now a deficit of 2000 MW power because of widespread corruption in this sector, they added. Regarding coal policy, Member Secretary of the Committee Prof Anu Muhammad said if the government delays to cancel agreement with Asia Energy, they would launch movement again. He also said they want application of environment-friendly technology, which would have least adverse effect on the environment as well as on the livelihood of common people. In the next two months, the Committee members will exchange views with experts and different professional groups and in Decem-ber they will hold a convention on the methods of extracting coal and its best use in the city, he added. Convener of the Committee Engn Sheikh Muhammad Shahidullah and Prof M Shamsul Alam of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology also spoke on the occasion.
