In conversation with Faridur Reza Shagor
Channel i and its multifarious roles
Cultural Correspondent
Topping the list of an online opinion poll (conducted by Bangladesh Cable TV Viewers Forum), Channel i is on an all-time high. Incidentally, Channel i turns 8 today. In an interview with The Daily Star, managing director of Impress Telefilm Ltd and Channel i, Faridur Reza Shagor talked about the channel's achievements and aspirations. How does Channel i distinguish itself from others? According to Shagor, "Channel i has a weakness; we like to top all the lists. We are the first digital satellite channel in the country. In many ways we have started trends that have been appreciated by the TV audience." "For instance, the traditional idea of 'peak hour' was 8 to 10pm. Channel i changed that concept. We popularised the idea that if programmes are scheduled according to the 'target audience', good ratings can be achieved at any certain time of the day. Housewives make the 'target audience' for the show Citycell Taroka Kathon and they usually take a break at noon. So we air the show around that time. On the other hand the audience for Tritiyo Matra browse the channels around midnight. Hence that show is aired after 1 am," Shagor elaborates. Besides producing quality TV shows and plays, Impress Telefilm Ltd (mother organisation of Channel i) started a trend of producing quality feature films. In recent years Impress Telefilm Ltd has produced movies including Shyamol Chhaya directed by Humayun Ahmed, Laal Shobuj by Shahidul Islam, Chashi Nazrul Islam's Megher Porey Megh, Shasti, Shubha, Duratto by Morshedul Islam and more, which have been premiered on Channel i as well as in movie theatres. Shyamol Chhaya was nominated to compete in 'Best Foreign Language Film' at the Oscars last year. Recently renowned British TV station, Channel 4, acquired the rights to Duratto and Shyamol Chhaya. "Recently formed Impress Audio Vision Ltd (also under Impress Telefilm Ltd) is promoting noted and emerging artistes of the country by producing music albums and VCDs," adds Shagor, "We also publish a fortnightly entertainment magazine Anando Alo. Our newly constructed studio will hopefully function starting from next month and we intend to take on bigger and better projects." Shagor ends the conversation on a high note, "I grew up in the Bangladeshi TV arena and I consider myself fortunate that my profession has enabled me to stay in that sector. I can boast that Channel i has the best staff around and we consider ourselves part of a big family."
