Makelele, who was forced back to play for Les Bleus by France coach Raymond Domenech after initially announcing his international retirement at the World Cup, said helping France in qualifying was the limit of his commitment.

"For me there's no question, I won't be going to the Euro," the Chelsea player told L'Equipe newspaper.

"I think I'm already fulfilling a reasonable objective by helping them to qualify."

The 33-year-old Makelele said he hopes Domenech has got the message by now.

"I think he will probably accept my decision," said Makelele, who was forced back to play for France in Euro 2008 qualifiers against Georgia and Italy.

"All I want is that France qualify so that I can walk away from the national squad in peace," he added.

The 52-times capped defensive midfielder hopes Domenech, who had been involved in a war of words with Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho over the affair, will also rest him for upcoming matches against Scotland and then the Faroe Isles.

France play Scotland in Glasgow on October 7 and host the Faroe Isles four days later in Sochaux.
